SI JOINT ASYMMETRY DURING PREGNANCY ASSOCIATED WITH POSTARTUM PAIN
Women who have asymmetric
sacroiliac (SI) joints (rotated hip, pelvis or sacrum) during pregnancy
are more likely to continue suffering from pelvic pain following the birth,
compared with mothers who have symmetrical SI laxity, researchers report.
SI joint asymmetry during pregnancy predicted moderate to severe postpartum
pelvic pain in 77% of subjects who experienced moderate to severe pain
during pregnancy. Chiropractic is a treatment-of-choice.

OVER
THE COUNTER PAINKILLER LEADING CAUSE OF LIVER FAILURE
What’s the leading cause of liver failure? Medications containing acetaminophen, such as Tylenol®. These findings were just published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. A three-year study looked at 308 patients with acute liver failure from 17 different liver care centers. The analysis found acetaminophen accounted for 39% of cases. In total, 73% were women. The majority of overdoses were not intentional. “Eighty-three percent of our patients who developed acute liver failure had exceeded the daily maximum recommended dose” notes author Dr. William M. Lee. Annals of Internal Medicine – December 17, 2002;947-54. http://www.annals.org/
WHAT
DOES CHIRORACTIC DO FOR INJURY? FOR HEALTHY PATIENTS? WHY GO TO A CHIRO?
The
chiropractor is licensed as a doctor, which means that our scope of practice
permits us to perform differential diagnosis. Chiropractic manipulative
therapy is effective for reduction of subluxation, improving range-of-motion
in restricted or deranged joints, restoring function, decreasing muscle
spasm, and improving tone and body balance. The
thrust manipulation is a unique form of very directed intervention. Research
suggests that use of reflex nerve signals in chiropractic can facilitate
states of health or help achieve a balanced physiology. Chiropractors are
highly trained and exposed to cutting-edge health information and are usually
willing to talk about specific health issues other docs might avoid.Even
“healthy patients” can have improved function, and preventive care keeps
smaller issues in the healthy patient from becoming bigger problems if
ignored. And remember, there is a lot more I can do than just “adjust”
bones –including soft-tissue muscle work and even rehab and nerve injury
recovery procedures.
SMOKING ASSOCIATED
WITH REFLUX HEARTBURN PROBLEMS
A new study led by Kulwinder Dua, MD, reveals that cigarette smoking impairs the closure reflex which closes off the vocal cords when fluid enters the throat. These findings are published in the December 2002 issue of the journal Gut.According to Dr. Dua, “Smoking cigarettes affects this reflex adversely. Our findings identify yet another deleterious effect of cigarette smoking that can weaken the airway’s protective mechanisms. These results may have implications in the cause of reflux-related respiratory complications in smokers.” “It may be that smoking damages the nerve endings that trigger these reflexes and could be due to nicotine or some other components contained in cigarette smoke,” speculates Dr. Dua. PARENTS UNAWARE
OF KIDS’ BACKPACK WEIGHT
Despite the impact it may have on their children’s health, most parents are unaware of how much weight their kids are towing in their backpack. These findings appear in the January issue of the Archives of Disease in Childhood.
Investigators looked at the backpacks of 188 grammar school students. The average youngsters toted backpacks weighing approximately 14% of their body weight, in keeping with the 10% to 20% maximums recommended by many child health advocates. However, many students in the study schlepped packs weighing considerable more. These heavy packs were linked with musculoskeletal problems. According to the report, “Most parents (96%) had never checked their child’s backpack weight; 34% had never checked the backpack contents.” Many packs contained items not necessary for school, which accounted for unneeded weight. The study’s authors suggest that parents examine their children’s packs, and eliminate unnecessary baggage.

STUDY COMPARES
EFFECTS OF REAR AND FRONTAL IMPACT CAR ACCIDENTS ON THE SPINE
Rear impact motor vehicle accidents may subject the spine to more destructive forces than front impact crashes, say investigators at the Spine Research Institute of San Diego in San Diego, California. Volunteers were subjected to both frontal and rear low-speed impacts. Speed and other parameters were held constant. “Analysis of data revealed that the rear impact crashes resulted in 2.8 times greater head acceleration than frontal crashes,” write the study’s authors. Rear impact crashes resulted in complex, multiple shock waves compared to the uni-directional, less complex front crashes.
