Cutting Back On Fat to Help Your Back

As a Chiropractor in NE Portland, patients often ask about ways to cut fat from their diets and reduce their body weight. The good news is there are solutions. The bad news is that excess body weight does have a negative impact on your spine, muscles, nerves, joints and bones. And yes, a diet loaded with saturated fats is not good for you.

If you can cut back, you can live better!

Now,  I am not insisting you be ripped or that you have to meet a certain body standard – not at all.  I want to say that carrying weight on your frame will hamper both your health and your ability to recover from all sorts of injuries. Even injuries incurred from whiplash, motor vehicle accidents, pinched nerves and slipped disks are harder to recover from if you are carrying extra weight.

Delicious Substitutions

Here’s a quickie hint to start the day. If you butter your toast or bagel in the morning, you are spreading on about 100 calories of fat, of which as much as 80% might be from saturated fats.   Here’s a great substitute,  “Reduced Guilt Spinach and Kale Greek Yogurt Dip” – spread it on your bread and enjoy. You won’t believe it. Crunchy green vegetables plus flavor minus guilty. Another favorite option and butter substitute is Earth Balance Organic Buttery Spread. Here are the stats for one serving of each:
Butter : 100 Cals. Total Fat 11g, Sat Fat 7g.
Earth Balance: 80 cals.  Total Fat 9g, Sat fat 2.5 g (better).
Spinach/Kale/Yogurt: 30 Cals. Fat Cals 20. Tot Fat 2.5g Sat Fat *0* (Wow!)

Oh, last thing… you can make the reduced guilt spread yourself using nonfat Greek yogurt, spinach and kale leaves, some spices and a heaping does of creativity. Try it out!
