The "New" Newsletter - Issue # 20 Summer 2006
WHAT'S NEWS AT BLUE HERON: First of all, this new newsletter format. I want to give you a few snippets of interesting information here in this mailer. If you are interested, go to our website and look up the latest newsletter for more on the subject. Our newsletters are online at blueheronchiro.com. We are using our newer equipment like the Low Level Laser Therapy unit and the Swan Neck Trainer very effectively. We feature massage as well as heat or ultrasound in most of our treatments. The SimpleCare plan (www.simplecare.com) makes discounting non-insurance visits to $35, $45 or $65 possible and allows you to get the care you need. You can even use this if you have a high deductible. Call for more information.
DID SOMEBODY SAY MRI? In the wake of all of the "Doctors are Rich and Evil" press that Willamette Week is putting out, I wanted to clarify that I have no connection, financial or contractual or otherwise, with any imaging facility (or actually any type of group that offers any sort of "kickbacks"). If I order you an MRI, it's for your benefit, not mine. Be wary of people making generalizations. If negative public perceptions make it any harder to stay in practice, there won't be any good doctors left at all!
GARDENING INJURIES ARE SPROUTING UP EVERYWHERE: Gardening can cause back pain and overuse injuries. Even in a small garden, tasks may include digging, raking, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying, which use muscles that perhaps have not been exercised for weeks or months. Injuries often result from inappropriate or excessive lifting or carrying, or to overzealous activities such as digging, fence painting or hedge cutting. Many garden activities can lead to back problems, including pulling weeds, raking a lawn and digging. Other potentially harmful causes of low back pain are frequent squatting and kneeling required for planting and weeding. Disc bulges can occur in the garden but more commonly seen are pulled muscles and generalized muscle soreness due to unaccustomed use. Suggestions include: Avoid marathon gardening sessions. Warm up before gardening with slow, sustained stretches and remember to do basic backstretches during your gardening. Rotate your tasks to avoid repetitive movements; for example, after 15 minutes of raking, swap to pruning for a while. Rest frequently and relax in the shade with a drink of water. Avoid uncomfortable positions. Don't overdo it. Problems? Come see me.
TURKEY IS A "SUPERFOOD": Turkey is one of the leanest sources of meat protein on the planet. 3 oz. of fresh ham has 5.5 grams of fat, while the same amount of skinless turkey breast has less than 0.2 grams of saturated fat. Wow! Turkey is an excellent source of nutrients, especially selenium, niacin, vitamins B6 and B12 as well as Zinc. Having a turkey meal once per week could take a significant amount of fat out of your diet. And unless you are short on fat, that's generally a good thing.
ADJUSTMENTS HELP RESTORE SPINAL CURVES AFTER MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS: Chiropractic care can help restore proper alignment, release muscle spasm and return you to function after motor vehicle accidents. This is more than short term relief: proper form and function allows proper blood flow and decreases degenerative pressures on joints, preventing post-trauma arthritis. We are talking about Low back pain, neck pain, headaches, arm & leg pain. No referral is necessary. We will get you X-rays if needed or order your Emergency Room records directly. We specialize in helping people recover in accident cases. We have massage therapists that complement the gentle, specific chiropractic manipulative therapy we provide.
